Till the beginning of the 20 th century, Dholera was a very prosperous port. The main devotees of Dholera were Pujabhai, Ajuba and Fuliba. Once Shriji Maharaj graced Dholera and had a seat on the bank of the pond. Pujabhai and other leaders of the village requested Shriji Maharaj to have a temple conctructed in Dholera so that a nice Satsang may be started and maintained in the village. Shriji Maharaj instructed that, a grand temple may be constructed on the place on which he was sitting. Thereafter Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami marked the place Shriji Maharaj was sitting. Shriji Maharaj entrusted the construction work of the temple under the supervision of Shree Nishkulanand Swami and Adbhutanand Swami.
On completion of the construction work of the temple Shriji Maharaj himself came to grace the invocation ceremony of the temple. On Vikram Samvat 1882 Vaisakh Sud Teras (Date: 19/05/1826) the idol-images of Madanmohanji Maharaj and Harikrishna Maharaj were installed by Shriji Maharaj himself. To the eastern direction of the temple is situated an idol-image of Ghanshyam Maharaj. In a temple situated in the western direction of the temple is installed Sukhsaiyaa (bed) of Shriji Maharaj and steps are there in the western direction where idol-images of Lord Vishnu sleeping on the bed of Shesh-nag(snake), The Surya-narayan (Sun-god), Dharm-Bhakti and in the eastern direction is installed the idol-image of Shiv-Parvarti. There is Sabha-Mandap to the west of this temple and behind the Sabha-Mandap is a beautiful umbrella carved out of marble stone at the place where there were the houses of Prasadi of the devotee Puja. There is beautiful pond to the South of the temple and there is carved in marble stone a beautiful umbrella.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami was an expert architect as well as sculptor and, therefore, he himself had carved a grand Kamaanand had placed it on the main gate of the temple. Since then this Kamaanhas been a centre of attraction of all the devotees and visitors of the temple. In the later years of his life Nishkulanand Swami had stayed in Dholera. The place of Dholera where he passed away to divine abode of Akshardhaam, a beautiful umbrella has been carved out in his memory. Shriji Maharaj had made Adbhutanand Swami as the First Mahant Swami of Swaminarayan temple of Dholera. Today the Swaminarayan temple of Dholera of Bhal region of Gujarat is a very well known place of pilgrimage.
